New mural in Houston at Crosstimbers and Fulton celebrates the health and vitality of the community.

Building a healthy community goes beyond medical clinics and health services. It also involves creating a sense of safety and engagement and promoting good health in all aspects of our lives. To this end, Vecino is excited to celebrate the completion of a new mural for the Northside, a community project that came about through Vecino’s partnership with housing provider Avenue CDC and Walmart.

The mural was inspired by residents in the Northline neighborhood, who have long sought to beautify the area and create a more welcoming and unified community. Many considered the wall to be divisive and not representative of the community’s spirit. After learning of this desire, Avenue CDC and Vecino decided to work together on the project. The mural, which measures more than 300 feet, spans a fence that borders the new Northside Walmart at Crosstimbers and Fulton.

Houston-based artist Alex Arzu is the creative talent behind the mural. Alex is well-known for his bold, colorful, community-focused approach. The artwork is intended to represent the local character and people of the Northside community. Vecino’s #LetHealthShine sun beams are integrated into the design, reminding us to celebrate the health and vitality of our city. Our hope is that this project will not only deter vandalism, but also serve as a source of pride and a chance to celebrate the health and connectedness of our community.

Houston-based artist Alex Arzu is the creative talent behind the new mural in Houston’s Northside. Inspired by community members, the project was a joint effort between Avenue CDC and Vecino Health Centers. Walmart donated the fence.

“The Near Northside and Northline neighborhoods have long been known for their vibrant history and culture,” says Mary Lawler, executive director of Avenue CDC, “We are thrilled to partner with Vecino and Alex Arzu on this initiative that will beautify the neighborhood and hopefully serve as a catalyst for continued revitalization efforts throughout the Northline.”

Avenue CDC, which has been involved in a number of other beautification and revitalization efforts in them community, fully funded the work. The Northside Walmart generously donated the fence on which the mural is painted. Vecino staff managed the project.

A large portion of Vecino’s patients come from the Northside neighborhood. We are excited about this new opportunity to #LetHealthShine by taking one more step toward a healthier Houston.
