Vecino team raises funds, builds awareness at Houston’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk
Why do we walk? Because we all share a destination: to end the pain and suffering caused by breast cancer. This common goal was top of mind on Saturday, May 20th when Vecino staff and their family members joined five thousand other Houstonians at the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk. The event raised funds for the American Cancer Society.
Thanks in part to American Cancer Society supporters, breast cancer death rates have been declining since 1989. But as those who gathered for the early morning walk know, there is still more work to do. This is especially true for medically underserved populations, who often don’t have access to early detection and treatment. According to the National Cancer Institute, this lack of medical resources contributes to a higher incidence of cancer death rates among communities living in poverty.
Seventeen people walked for the Vecino team, and many more showed their support through donations. Overall, the event raised more than $415,000. This money will fund groundbreaking breast cancer research, and also provide free comprehensive information and support, helping people in all communities take steps to reduce their breast cancer risk or find it early when it is most treatable.
If you didn’t get a chance to contribute, it’s not too late. The Vecino team raised over $500 for the event, but we are still working toward our $1,000 goal.
